Landed Cost Calculator

Estimate duty, import tax and true cost per imported unit.

Method and assumptions

Landed cost combines purchase and import costs into a comparable unit cost. Tax bases differ by jurisdiction, so this calculator uses an explicit simplified model and editable rates.

Customs value = product value + freight + insurance. Duty = customs value × duty rate. Import tax = (customs value + duty) × tax rate.

Worked scenario

Build one shipment from supplier value, origin charges, international freight, insurance, duty, import tax treatment, brokerage and destination delivery. Then enter expected sellable units after damage or quality loss. Compare the initial quote with the final per-unit cost after customs release and warehouse receipt.

How to interpret the result

The tool performs arithmetic with the rates and bases supplied; it does not classify goods or determine legal tax recovery. Separate permanent cost from recoverable tax and temporary cash requirements. For mixed shipments, allocate shared charges using value, weight, volume or another documented driver rather than units by default.

Common mistakes

  • Using an unconfirmed tariff code or duty rate.
  • Including recoverable import tax in permanent margin cost.
  • Allocating a mixed shipment equally despite different freight usage.

Before using the result

  1. Define the exact endpoint of landed cost.
  2. Keep every quote, customs entry and final invoice.
  3. Reconcile actual sellable quantity before closing the shipment.

Questions to check before deciding

Does this determine the correct HS code or duty rate?

No. Obtain the classification and rate from customs guidance or a qualified broker. The calculator only applies the rate you enter.

Is import VAT always calculated after duty?

Not in every jurisdiction. Review the destination-country tax base and adjust the result when additional items must be included.

Landed cost and freight: from supplier quote to sellable unit

Freight quotations and customs entries use different units and valuation rules. This guide shows how to preserve those boundaries and reconcile the estimate after a shipment closes.
